TAIWO AWONIYI sustained a broken nose following an aerial collision in last night's FA Cup tie with Exeter.

Grecians goalkeeper Whitworth came out to claim a high ball and accidentally hit Awoniyi - the striker appeared to headbutt the keeper, leaving him on the floor.

The striker, who had scored Nottingham Forest's second, received treatment from club doctors and paramedics.

There was good news soon after, with reports that Awoniyi was able to walk back to the changing rooms from the medical centre - he is said to have 'looked a bit groggy' but was walking unaided.

Exeter City came close to a giant killing in a thrilling encounter but eventually fell to a penalty shootout defeat to Nuno's side.

Boss Nuno Espirito Santo said: "It was a concussion and a broken nose.

"He was in a lot of pain. But he has a smile on his face because he scored for us and did an amazing job. We are delighted for him (to score)."

Nuno said ahead of last night's shootout win: “I think we are in a good place as a squad.

"As long as we keep ourselves healthy and work as good as we are working, I think we can compete until the end of the season

“It was a quiet window for all the clubs. It is always very difficult to operate.

"We had a clear intention to retain the core of the squad. All the players are here and available.

"We didn’t achieve what we wanted because it is very hard. We keep going.”

How long will Awoniyi be out for?

The nasal bone takes roughly 4-6 weeks to heal properly.

He normally comes off the bench and could be out for around six weeks.

Of course, it depends on the severity of the fracture and medical advice.

Most athletes need to wear a protective face mask during this period to prevent further injury.

How the action unfolded last night...

Carlos Miguel gifted Exeter the lead early on, dropping a cross into the path of striker Josh Magennis, who tapped home the opening goal.

Ramon Sosa got the scores back level, after controlling a well weighted pass from Ibrahim Sangare, before powering an effort beyond Joe Whitworth.

Taiwo Awoniyi gave Forest the lead with an excellent finish on the turn just before half-time.

Exeter managed to get themselves back into the game in the second half, as Josh Magennis powered an effort towards goal, that looked as though it was sent in by Willy Boly.

The scores remained at 2-2, and the game went to penalties.

Exeter missed two from the spot, and Neco Williams scored the winning spot kick to send Forest through, with the celebrations from Nuno Espirito Santo's side very muted.

I've won.. but at what cost?

Nottingham Forest got themselves into the fifth round of the FA Cup last night, beating Exeter on penalties.

However, they weren't without casualties during their win.

The main casualty was Taiwo Awoniyi, who was stretchered off with what looked a concussion, but with what Nuno Espirito Santo suspected was a broken nose.

He also lost goalkeeper Carlos Miguel, with his regular first choice Matz Sels having to come on after an hour, seeing out penalty kicks.

Nuno Espirito Santo also had to call on Elliot Anderson, Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood to help his side get past Exeter.

With a game against Fulham on Saturday, Forest will not have wanted to call on their more regular first teamers against League One Exeter.

    Caldwell 'proud' after losing 'lottery'

Exeter chief Gary Caldwell says their FA Cup shootout agony showed what a "special football club" he has - as "the only supporter-owned club in England.

Caldwell told ITV:"I am really proud of the team and the whole football club really.

"We just came up short on penalties, which is a lottery. I am really proud of the players.

"I thought we were outstanding. With 10 men it was backs against the wall. We could have won or lost it near the end. It is a fantastic effort from the players.

"I think it shows the potential and what they are capable of and they can raise their game.

" We have to show that commitment to each other and if we do that, I am sure we have got a lot to look forward to."

We 'live' for these Mag-estic nights

Exeter skipper Josh Magennis says clubs "live for" such FA Cup occasions - after Forest finally killed them off.

Magennis told ITV: "Going down to 10 men killed the momentum a little bit.

I was entrusted to be captain of the team so I thought it was my responsibility to step forward and take the first penalty.

"They're not in their position in the Premier League for no reason. It's back to bread and butter and we've not been in a rich vein of form.

"But we can take positives from this. We can take confidence.

"Everyone left the stadium knowing that was an entertaining match. These type of nights you want to live for."
