Roosters replace Keary with Cowboys veteran; rising Storm duo earn extensions — Transfer Centre (2024)

Cowboys halfback Chad Townsend has signed a one-year deal with the Sydney Roosters from 2025.

Townsend’s three-year deal with the Cowboys finishes up at the end of this season and the 33-year-old wasn’t offered another contract.

The Roosters wanted an experienced half to help guide Sam Walker and Sandon Smith and they’ve landed the 2016 premiership winner.

The Bulldogs and Super League club Catalans were also keen but Townsend is heading to the Roosters to replace Luke Keary who is heading to the Super League in 2025 for a swansong season.

A premiership-winning half with Cronulla in 2016, Townsend led the Cowboys to a preliminary final in his first season at the club (2022).

He regressed in 2023, but has bounced back to form this season with his 19 try assists, the second-best mark in the NRL.

STORM SIGN DUO

The Storm have extended a pair of promising youngsters in forward Alec Macdonald and outside back Grant Anderson.

Macdonald has earned a bumper new four-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2028, while Anderson has extended his contract by another year to the end of next season.

Macdonald, 22, came to Storm from Wynnum-Manly in Brisbane ahead of the 2022 season and has now played 35 NRL games for the club.

“I’m stoked to have been given a contract for the next few years. It feels like all my hard work has paid off. I can now focus on my footy and improving even more,” he said.

“When I was younger, I struggled to make rep teams so I’m really grateful to Tim Glasby who first spotted me and gave me my first opportunity at Storm. Also super grateful to Bellsa and the club for taking a chance on me.

“When I first came down, Brisbane was home but now I feel that Melbourne is that. I love the club, the culture and the lifestyle down here.

“I also have a great team and roommate in Joe Chan who I hope also stays with the club so we can progress our careers together.”

Anderson, 24, made his NRL debut at the Storm in 2022 and now has 17 appearances to his name.

“This is my third year here now and I’m stoked to be here for longer because the club is like a second family,” he said.

“I was playing under-20s and then Covid hit so to be honest I didn’t know where I would end up career-wise.

“I was fortunate to be picked up by the Northern Pride for a season and then the Sunshine Coast Falcons. I came down to the Storm on a pre-season trial and the rest is history.

“I always dreamed of playing NRL so to be here still doing that is really special and for my family and partner for all the sacrifices and support they have shown to help me along the way, I can’t wait to rip in with the lads.“

PANTHERS UTILITY RE-SIGNS

Panthers outside back Daine Laurie has re-signed with the club on a one-year deal until the end of 2025.

Laurie made his NRL debut at Penrith in in 2020 before joining the Wests Tigers for three seasons (2021-23) and returning to the foot of the mountains.

The 24-year-old has played 61 NRL games and represented the Prime Minister’s XIII in 2022 and Indigenous All Stars (2023).

“I love this club,” Laurie said.

“Panthers was the first team I played for and this place is home to me. I can’t wait to rip in for the rest of the season and then again next year.”

A proud Indigenous man, Laurie joined the Panthers in 2017 and played in the club’s SG Ball, Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup teams before making his NRL debut for the club in 2020.

Panthers General Manager of Rugby League Shane Elford added: “Daine has made the most of his opportunity since returning to the club this season, and we look forward to his continued progression in Panthers colours.”

ROOSTERS’ BIG BOOST

The Roosters have confirmed that rugby union star Mark Nawaqanitawase has been granted a release from his contract and will be eligible to join the Tricolours once his rugby sevens duties are finished at the Olympics.

Nawaqanitawase signed a two-year deal last December to join the Roosters in 2025, but after being left out of the Wallabies squad for this month’s Tests, there has been a push for him to speed up the process so he can spend some time in rugby league this season.

Could Lomax backflip on Eels deal? | 01:09

That was confirmed on Tuesday with the club announcing that he’s taken the final spot in their top-30 roster, but Roosters fans shouldn’t expect him to be rushed into the NRL this season.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson stressed on Sunday night that his star recruit would need plenty of time to get used to the new sport, with Nawaqanitawase likely to spend time in NSW Cup where the Roosters are second last.

He doubled down on that in a statement, with the former Wallaby to spend plenty of time learning the finer details of what it takes to make it in rugby league.

The Roosters have some incredibly talented players for him to learn off, with Joseph Manu and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii going the opposite way to rugby union next year.

“While Mark will be taking the final spot in our roster for 2024, our focus won’t be on rushing him into the NRL but about fast-tracking his transition into rugby league,” Robinson said.

“We’re really pleased to be in a position to have Mark join us once his commitments in Paris are over.

“We’re looking forward to officially welcoming Mark to the Roosters next month and we wish him all the very best in his representative duties at the Olympics. Bonne chance (Good luck)!”

CRICHTON INKS NEW TWO-YEAR DEAL

The Roosters have confirmed gun back rower Angus Crichton has signed a fresh extension that will see him remain at the club until the end of 2026.

The 28-year-old has played 111 of his 166 NRL games at the Tricolours, winning a premiership with the club in 2019.

Crichton began the 2024 season in NSW Cup, having endured a turbulent 2023 season before returning to form and earning himself an Origin call-up.

Crichton extends with Chooks until 2026 | 00:30

According to The Daily Telegraph, Crichton’s new two-year deal is reportedly worth $1.6 million, or $800,000 per-season.

That’s a $200,000 pay rise for the representative star who knocked back offers from overseas rugby and NRL rivals to remain with the Roosters.

“I’m incredibly proud to continue my journey with the Sydney Roosters,” Crichton said in a club statement.

“This team is like family to me, and so are the people within the club.

“There’s honestly nowhere else I’d rather be. I feel like I still have so much more to give, and I’m committed to continuing to bring my best and to playing my role for the team.”

Meanwhile, head coach Trent Robinson said: “This is Angus’ sixth season as a Rooster, and he has openly spoken about what being part of this club and our community means to him.

“I really value Gus as a player, and as a person, so I’m looking forward to continuing to work with him over the next few years.”

MANLY LOCK IN CULT HERO

The Manly Sea Eagles have re-signed fan favourite Gordon Chan Kum Tong until the end of 2025.

The 22-year-old has impressed while coming up through the ranks at the club. He first joined the Manly system at 15-years old and has gone on to captain the club’s SG Ball, Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup teams.

He made his NRL debut in Round 26 last year and has added five more games to his tally — including four this season off the bench.

“Gordie brings a lot of energy and is a fantastic team first type of person. We feel like he is getting better and better with his football,’’ Manly coach Anthony Seibold said via a club statement on Monday.

“He is right at the beginning of his NRL career at only 22.

“To have Lachlan Croker, Jake Simpkin, and Gordie as our three hookers in 2025 gives us great depth as all three have played first grade.

“Jake has played 43 NRL matches and he is also only 22, while Lachlan has played over 100 NRL games.

“We feel like we have got a good mix of experience and emerging talent in that position.”
