Parker, 74, Feb. 29. Arrangements by Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. 5th-graders disciplined after fracas By PAMELA BABco*ck Staff writer RALEIGH Two fifth-graders at Lead Mine Elementary School were disciplined after they got into a fight and one stabbed the other in the lip with a pair of scissors, authorities said. The stabbing was provoked when a female student shoved another student's head into a water fountain as she was taking a drink, the school's principal, Mike Jordan, said Tuesday.
The injured student was treated at Raleigh Community Hospital and did not require stitches, Jordan said. The fracas broke out at 3:15 p.m. Monday as the two 11-yearold girls were leaving school for the day. As one of the students sipped from a water fountain, the other shoved her in the back of the head. "She got water all over her face and the other student started laughing," Jordan said.
"It just hit her the wrong way and they just started after each other. It was pushing and shoving, and a couple of punches were thrown." Jordan described the students as "just average kids" who had not had any problems with each other in the past. He said one student was carrying scissors because she had left a class where she was working on a social studies or science project that involved "cutting and pasting Sanford teens charged in death of man, 19 The Associated Press SANFORD Two Sanford teens have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 19-year-old Lee County man who was run over by a car Feb. 23. Early Tuesday, detectives arrested Antonio Duan Baldwin, 18, of 5425 Cumnock Road, and Keith Antwan Williams, 17, of 613 Matthews Street and charged them in the death of Bruce Randall Williams of Mount Pisgah Church Road.
Bruce Williams, no relation to Keith Williams, died after being run over by a 1991 Nissan Sentra that forced his vehicle off the road. The two were being held Tuesday without bond in the Lee County Jail. Security plans explored for Randolph schools The Associated Press ASHEBORO Locking doors from the outside, banning book bags that could hide weapons, and installing television cameras in hallways are among proposals Randolph County school officials will consider to make their 21- school system safer. The Randolph County Board of Education on Monday began discussing ways to improve school security in the wake of last week's stabbing death of an eighth-grader at Archdale-Trinity Middle School. Other proposals include providing self-defense training for teachers, conflict-resolution classes for at-risk students or handheld metal detectors; toughening the suspension policy; enclosing covered walkways; having panic buttons in classrooms; and requiring identification badges for visitors.
"Some of these extraordinary safety measures make sense on one level, but they begin to change the nature of the school and that's the balance we're wrestling school Superintendent George Fleetwood told school board members Monday. "We don't want the schools to become armed enclaves," he said. Death notices MARY E. THOMPSON MOREHEAD CITY Mary Elizabeth 'Lib' Thompson, 66, died Sunday. Funeral 11 a.m.
